Search keys

This help page documents search keys available in HPB.

Search by people

People are indexed according to their 'last name, initials' or by 'last name, first name' (without a space after the comma). For example: Johnson,A or Johnson,Alfred. If you type n a name without a comma followed by the initials or first name, all people with that surname will be displayed. However, if you type in a name with a comma followed by the initials or first name, only people with names identical to that typed in will be displayed. Naturally, you can use wildcards here as well.

Search by year of publication

If you are searching for publications by a particular author and you wish to limit the search results to a specific year of publication, you can modify the query by using the following search keys. You can search by year of publication using the following operators (the search engine does not include serials in the search results):

  • AND JVU 1980
    published in 1980
  • AND JVU < 1980
    published in or before 1980
  • AND JVU > 1980
    published in or after 1980
  • AND JVU 1980-1984
    published between 1980 and 1984, including 1980 and 1984

Overview of all search keys

Enter the following special search keys before the search term:

  • Search by [CID] CERL ID
This index is used to retrieve records by their HPB ID (which is also used to cite HPB records). HPB IDs can also be truncated by appending “?”. Example: CID de-604.vk.bv001645308
  • Search by [CSO] Cataloguing Source
This index can be used to select all records from one source. The ISIL/MARC21/CERL defined code needs to be known. Search for example cso czprnk to retrieve all records of the National Library of the Czech Republic. To perform the same search without knowing the code, look at the “Content of the HPB Database” start page
  • Search by [FMO] Former Owner
    [FOC] Former Owner (Corporate Body)
[FMO] and [FOC] are subsets of the regular person and corporate body indexes [PER] and [COR] with the same indexing (i.e. persons are searched by surname, first name). They are however limited to persons and corporate bodies identified to have a provenance role to the described work. Only entities catalogued in access point form will be found. The [PRN] index is a keyword index, combining the provenance related free text note elements and the access point name forms with relevant relator codes. Proximity operators are applicable. Example: foc bayerische staatsbibliothek ; fmo Magyary-Kossa, Sámuel ; prn motto nisi dominus frustra ; prn (exlibris or “ex libris”) and Esterhazy

    [FPS] fingerprint (string)
Fingerprints or fingerprint fragments are retrievable from these two indexes. Example: fps 4.n- ledi?

Information specifying the location of an item can be search here, for example shelfmarks or sublocations: hln 2011? ; hln magdalen and cso GB-UkOxU (retrieves all books from Oxford University Magdalen College)
  • Search by [IPN] Imprint Name
A separate keyword index for persons and institutions related to the physical production and distribution of the book was created. It consists of name forms in access point form if accompanied by a relevant relator code (this part is a keyword indexed subset of the general person / corporate body indexes [PER] and [COR]) and additionally the original imprint phrasing as on the item. Proximity operators are applicable. Example: ipn elsevier d?
  • Search by [PRN] Provenance Names
  • Search by [DIM] dimensions
Use this index to search for the format of a book. Use keywords, for example, search operators. Examples: DIM 8o
DIM (2o OR fo* OR in-2* OR in-fo*)
DIM (4o or 4to or qua* or in-4*)
DIM (8o or 8vo or oct* or in-8*)
    DIM (12o or 12mo or in-12*)
